RTÉ staff will soon have the opportunity to apply for voluntary redundancy, with applications opening on Wednesday, April 23, for a four-week period, pending final preparations.
The redundancy scheme, similar to those offered in 2017 and 2021, will be capped at €300,000. It includes two options: voluntary severance for staff under 55 and early retirement for those over 55. To be eligible, staff must have at least two years of continuous service, though members of RTÉ’s Leadership Team are excluded from applying.
Those accepted into the scheme must leave the organisation by December 31.
This move follows delays in the approval process, with Media Minister Patrick O’Donovan previously hesitant to support the scheme due to concerns about its alignment with other State agency redundancy packages. He now says the decision is in RTÉ’s hands and sees it as an opportunity for the broadcaster to adapt to changes in the media landscape.
Employees have expressed strong interest in the redundancy package, with some predicting high demand. They have also raised concerns about the organisation’s internal culture. RTÉ will fund the redundancies from its own budget, and any extension of the scheme beyond 2025 would require further Government approval.
