American political commentator Tucker Carlson paid a visit to Conor McGregor’s Dublin pub, The Black Forge Inn, on Tuesday evening following a lengthy interview with the MMA superstar earlier in the day.
The two-hour interview, which McGregor says will be broadcast “soon,” is expected to cover a wide range of topics, including McGregor’s views on Ireland’s current political landscape, immigration, and the country’s future direction, subjects he has been increasingly vocal about on social media in recent months.
Carlson’s visit, part of his European tour to meet various high-profile figures, has fueled further speculation about McGregor’s political ambitions, specifically, a potential run for President of Ireland.
Adding to the buzz, three independent councillors from Dublin and Kildare were spotted at The Black Forge tonight. While the presence of local politicians may suggest the beginnings of a grassroots political network, any serious bid for the presidency remains a distant prospect.
Under Irish law, a presidential candidate needs the backing of at least 20 members of the Oireachtas (TDs or Senators) or the support of a majority of four local authorities. At present, McGregor appears to have the informal support of just a small handful of Independent councillors, well short of what’s required to officially enter the race.
Despite the slim odds, McGregor’s popularity and media presence continue to make him a figure of interest in Ireland’s political discourse. Whether this evening’s gathering was simply a social visit or the early rumblings of a political campaign remains to be seen.
One thing is certain with Carlson’s spotlight and McGregor’s profile, tonight’s meeting at The Black Forge will only intensify speculation in the weeks ahead.
